$aban has some $plainin' to do
nowhere else in the world would you find people (including myself) who are proud to refer to themselves as the rear-end of a racoon, 'buhcept in good old louisiana. then again, i am from lafourche parish, grew up spending my saturday mornings on a shrimpboat, and thought digging for worms in the mud was the equivalent of a city kid getting to go to chucky cheese's(or something) so, when i came across nick saban's recent comments talking about "coonasses" i wasnt offended. although the fact that he tied the word "coonass" to someone "working in a ditch" ruffles a few feathers, dude was just making a joke. but still. how many louisiana high school coaches are coonasses? who knows. pretty interesting little audio clip comes out just a week or so before signing day. i bet it was tubby! i bet tubby had some reporters bait him into saying it! anyway, so, we arent like, pissed, or anything about this. but for real nicky, watch what you say dude. or else the flames on the bridges will turn into full fledged fires. by the way, we think people from west virginia talk funny and smell like pepperoni rolls(whatever the hell those things are)

I don't think his use of the term coonass is all that offensive, but the overall tone of his remarks is.
Taken as a whole, he clearly he means to lump most Louisianians together as poorly educated, low-wage, manual laborers with Cajun accents. While we do indeed have a lot of those people here, there's nothing wrong with being one of them if thats where life leads you. Saban's tone, however, suggests that he considers those people inferior and worthy of ridicule. That's a problem, especially when you consider his recent remarks about the people of Louisiana always having a special place in his heart, or some such bullshit.
He must've thought what he was saying was inappropriate, or the conversation wouldn't have been hushed and private.
yea i think what pissed most people off was how he associated the word to "someone working in a ditch" i wasnt THAT offended. i mean, i've been called a coonass since i was like 4. no big deal. we're like puerto ricuenos. puro proud of our heritage, ese. but yea, im sure some people are pissed
